Since I’m on a lichen roll….
This is somewhat related to my last post, in that there’s British Soldier lichen (Cladonia cristatella) in both of them, but it was taken at a different location. I like these little guys, so stiff and solemn in their uniforms, nodding towards each other so formally.

That’s a great name for a lichen: British soldier. Do you know if any other lichens are named after people’s costumes?

It is a great name, isn’t it? Apparently they’re named after the British “redcoats” in the revolutionary war. It would be more accurate if there was more red, I think—they tend to look like red hats.
But I don’t know if any other lichens, or other plants generally, are named after things like uniforms. I wish I did!
