Spring maples

We have some very big maple trees on our island. I like the early-spring brilliance of the new leaves way up there.

First 2013 rhodos

I like taking pictures of rhododendrons. I expect I’ll take more. But these are the first this year.

It’s so convenient having a forest next to our yard when I want dramatic shots against dark backgrounds.

Streaky mystery

There’s nothing particularly unusual about this picture, it’s just another a scenic beach shot. But when I looked at the photo, what caught my eye were those streaky light effects in the shadow behind the sandstone formation. Now I’ve had light effects appear on shots in the past, they tend to happen when the angle of camera lens is in a particular relationship to the angle of the sun—but I can’t account for the light streaks only appearing in the shadow. That’s a new one on me.

It’s a drop of fresh sap hanging from a spider thread. Kind of a permanent raindrop.

Birdie leaves

This is a photo from a couple of weeks ago when one of the maples in the front yard was just putting out new leaves. I was startled by how much the pairs with the sheathes looked like little birds, all alert and ready to fly.
